X, the social media platform that used to be called Twitter, is experimenting with a new subscription model called "Not A Bot", which will charge users a $1 annual fee for basic features. Users who subscribe will be charged for likes, reposts, quoting other accounts' posts, and bookmarking posts on the web version.
This new subscription aims to combat bots and spammers, with the fee varying by country based on exchange rates. The test will initially roll out in New Zealand and the Philippines. Existing users won't be affected, but new users who don't subscribe will have limited functionality.
