Superfights are rare and special events in the UFC, where champions from different weight classes face each other in epic battles. In 2023, we witnessed not one, but two superfights between the same pair of fighters: Islam Makhachev, the dominant lightweight champion, and Alexander Volkanovski, the resilient featherweight champion.
The first encounter, in February, was a thrilling five-round war that ended with a narrow decision victory for Makhachev. The second showdown, in October, was a stunning display of power and precision by Makhachev, who finished Volkanovski with a devastating knockout in the opening round. With two wins over a fellow champion, Makhachev cemented his legacy as the best fighter in the world. He is the undisputed Fighter of the Year.
